Key Areas of Security That Canít Be Ignored

Security is important to all of us and tenants in a rental property are no different. When looking for somewhere to live, key areas of security can play a large part in a property’s appeal. Here’s a list of security considerations to look for when you are purchasing or maintaining a property:

  • Windows – Can they be locked? Are there a reasonable number of windows that can open fully to let in fresh air?
  • Doors – Are deadlocks installed? Would a spyhole be useful?
  • Flyscreens – Is it necessary to have security screens installed? Any type of flyscreen is desirable to allow fresh air in and keep insects out.
  • Locks on garage – Ensure they are well maintained to protect cars and stored goods.
  • Lock on shed for tools and lawn mower – Often an attractive target for thieves, expensive tools and equipment can be stored securely in a shed to avoid theft.
  • Alarm – Although it may seem like an optional extra, an alarm may be desirable for some tenants as it can help decrease their content insurance premiums.
  • Apartments secure entrance with intercom – ensure the strata body keeps the entrance secure and well maintained.
When considering the security aspects of your investment property see it from a home-owner’s point of view. Ask yourself whether you would be happy with the level of security in a building. Then you’ll be on your way to providing a safe environment and having happy tenants in return.
